Description
Catalina Sounds Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, South Island, New Zealand, 2023
Grape: 100% Sauvignon Blanc, sustainable farming, fruit sourced 60% Southern Valleys & 40% Wairau Valley, a small proportion is fermented in large seasoned oak cuves
Producer Tasting Note:
On the nose there is a powerful explosion of guava and an aromatic mix of varietal herbal note and cracked bay, complemented with tropical fruits, citrus and stone-fruits and a precise minerality. The palate is elegantly proportioned with lovely soft acid carrying the fruit flavours to a very long, mouthwatering aromatic finish.
Since 2005 Catalina Sounds has had a singular vision to produce the best wines in Marlborough. Named after the majestic Catalina flying boats that once flew across the vast Marlborough Sounds. Catalina Sounds produce wines that are unique with minimum intervention and are true to their vineyard sites while capturing the best of the region.
Critics' Tasting Notes:
"Ruby grapefruit, green honeydew melon and lily followed by celery and a hint of lemongrass. Medium-bodied, mouthwatering acidity. Crisp and delightful."
90/100 points, James Suckling, October 2023
"Tangy, vibrant wine with passionfruit, guava, capsicum and gooseberry flavours. Punchy, textural sauvignon
blanc with appealing purity. Good food wine in a mouth-watering, bone dry style"
92/100 points, Bob Campbell, The Real Review, August 2023
"A classic bouquet and palate, bright, fresh, crisp and crunchy with flavours of fresh herbs with a grassy quality, green apple and gooseberry, peach and a light wet stone quality. Taut, salivating fruity and dry on the finish. Overall a balanced and well made wine with a classic varietal signature with a fresh crunchy fruit expression. Best drinking from 2024 through 2028."
93/100 points (Excellent), Cameron Douglas MS, The Shout, September 2023
Winemaking: This 100% Sauvignon Blanc is certified with Appellation Marlborough Wine. Which means it has been made from 100% Marlborough grapes, grown sustainably in Marlborough and bottled in New Zealand. After the hard work is done in the vineyard, the ripe fruit is harvested at just the right time. Grapes from individual vineyards and blocks were kept as separate as possible in the winery. The juice is split quickly from the skins and lightly clarified before a low-and-slow fermentation. Post-ferment the wines is left on yeast lees for a touch of added texture before blending and bottling. No animal products are used, creating a vegan friendly wine.
Food Match: Terrific with fresh seafood, summer salads and grilled vegetables
