Description

Chateau Bellefont Belcier Grand Cru Classe, Saint Emilion Grand Cru, Bordeaux, France, 2018

Grapes: A blend of 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, organic, 13.5 ha vineyard on clay/limestone soil plateau, aged in French oak barrels (30% each in new/first fill/second fill) and 10% in ovoid wooden vats

Producer Tasting Note:

Aromas of crushed rock and stone in the forefront, the nose then moves towards the floral side before the red berries and liquorice kick in. Flavours of wild raspberry, chocolate, walnut and mushrooms. Its terroir is revealed even more accurately through a refreshing limestone-like tension. Polished and racy tannins, fine, powerful, full and lively.

Critics' Tasting Notes:

"Elegant, refined, concentrated, silky, fresh and pure, this beautiful wine exudes all the rocks, stones, flowers, licorice, spice, cherries, plums and blackberries you could ask for. The wine provides length, complexity and freshness coupled with the ability to age and evolve. The wine was made from blending 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and is aged in a combination of new and used French oak casks with 10% of the harvest being aged in amphora."

95/100 points, Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider, March 2021

"The 2018 Chateau Bellefont-Belcier is a gorgeous bottling from proprietor Peter Kwok, as this blends 70% Merlot with 25% Cabernet Franc and a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon. The rich cassis and black cherry notes from the Merlot really impress mid-palate, as stony and savory tones round out this beautiful wine that really needs another year or two in the bottle. The potential is really there with this concentrated Saint-Emilion — just try to forget it for a few more years."  Drink 2024-2040

93/100 points, Owen Bargreen, February 2022

"Ruby red with initial signs of ripeness; intense, fruity nose, showing complexity and herbal spice, with noticeable cassis; juicy, compact palate, almost two mouthfuls of wine, yet balanced and endowed with the finest tannins, energetic with tension, breed and length; in the style of the vintage, with wonderful potential"

93/100 points, Adrian van Velsen - vvWine.ch, July 2025

The Property: Founded in the late 18th century, the Bellefont-Belcier estate is situated on Saint-Emilion’s south-facing slopes, neighbouring Chateau Pavie, Chateau Larcis-Ducasse and Chateau Tertre Roteboeuf.
