Description
Les Clans d'Esclans Provence Rosé, Chateau d'Esclans, Cote de Provence, France, 2023
Grapes: Old vine Grenache & Rolle (Vermentino), Les Clans is made from grapes exclusively from the vineyards of Chateau d’Esclans, hand harvested, optical eye sorting, closed circuit pressing under nitrogen, barrel fermented and oak aged in new & second use demi-muids, lees stirring for 11 months before bottling.
Producer Tasting Note:
Ripe red berry aromas with toasty and hazel nut notes. Full-bodied palate, yet elegant. Ripe pineapple and ginger notes with hints of black liquorice, making for a rich and exotic palate. Elegant, long and juicy with a suave finish.
Critics' Tasting Notes:
"A multi-dimensional rosé; crushed bright red fruit, white flowers, stone fruit, gorgeous herbal notes, bitter orange, a touch of reduction and saline mineral, savoury nuances. Medium intensity with generous, creamy mouthfeel, almost Burgundian in complexity with clear rose, strawberry and raspberry tones precise and well defined. There’s a textural structure from lees ageing and a long, saline finish balanced with herbs and fleur de sel."
WORLD'S BEST SOMMELIERS' SELECTIONS, 2025
"Composed primarily of old-vine Grenache Noir and Vermentino, the 2023 Cotes de Provence Rose Les Clans opens with a delicate, refined bouquet of strawberries, gooseberries, spring flowers and subtle hints of spice and oak. Medium- to full-bodied, it's round and supple, with an elegant core of fruit and a fleshy mid-palate that leads to a long, mouthwatering, mineral-driven finish. It should age gracefully for at least 2–3 years and beyond." Drink 2025-2035
92+/100 points, Yohan Castaing, WINE ADVOCATE, June 2025
"None of these rosés could be described as anything other than pale, but the 2023 is marginally paler than its three predecessors and more like the 2017 in its peach, rather than salmon, tone. The nose is still quite primary, not unexpectedly, and potent too. A jasmine floral note, peach-like fruit, citrus and creamy richness all move seamlessly on to the palate, there joined by pure red berry fruit, citrus freshness and oak that is already comfortably integrated. The overall effect is impressive in its balanced combination of succulence, volume, vivacity, and structure. Les Clans seems to have reached a new level in this vintage, despite it being a vintage of challenges for the region as a whole.!
95/100 points, Joanna Simon, DECANTER, 2025
Sacha Lichine's superb range of rosé wines is aimed at producing the highest quality at all price points and serious, "fine wine" level, gastronomic experiences such as Les Clans (only "Garrus" is above it in the hierarchy) compete with top white Burgundy for attention from connoisseurs.
Food Match: This rosé appears to flit effortlessly between red and white characteristics but is probably best paired with seafood; fruit de mer, or grilled langoustine, tomato, Mediterranean herbs and vegetables, or water melon and feta salad.
