Mars Komagatake Third Edition Nature of Shinshu Shinanotanpopo

Mars Komagatake, Third Edition "Nature of Shinshu - Shinanotanpopo", Single Malt Whisky, Japan, 70cl

Distilled in 2014 and bottled at cask strength (52% ABV) in 2017, this is the third edition in the "Nature of Shinsu" series of malt whiskies from Mars. The name Shinanotanpopo refers to a local dandelion found in the region.

Young whisky, matured in ex-Bourbon casks and new American white oak barrels, is blended with rare, over 20 year old, sherry cask aged malt giving a floral and fruity whisky. 

Critics' Tasting Notes:

"NOSE: The nose has a gentle fruitiness along with touches of peaches jam, vanilla, marzipan and gentle smokiness.

TASTE: The taste is slightly sweet and peppery with notes of nuts, peaches, yellow apples followed by caramel.

FINISH: The finish is quite long, pretty warming and fades out slowly with nice fruitiness and hints of almonds and spicy oak."

"This is clearly Japanese single malt (beware of the pure malts) and we’ve already tried a handful of rather brilliant Komagates. Colour: gold. Nose: some pencil shavings and quite a lot of vanillin, then rather apples and whiffs of coal smoke, which works very well. Some burnt brownies too, cooked honey, and a little camphor and thuja wood. With water: freshly sawn pinewood! Mouth (neat): you feel that the oak plays an important part here, and some could even find it a little oak-heavy, but the mentholy notes, as well as these hints of incense do bring something special to it. In short, it’s not ‘sawdust and basta’. With water: well, not quite. Finish: medium, rather pastry-like, with some drier honey notes. Comments: okay, the oak’s a little loud for me, but other than that, what a fine drop!"

Mars Shinshu, the main distillery (of two), is tucked away at 2,625 ft in the Nagano Alps, making it Japan’s highest whisky distillery. Nagano’s heavy snowfall and temperate climate provide an abundance of soft and delicate glacier water for use in this dynamic range of both blended and single malt expressions
