Description

Chateau Meyney "Prieur de Meyney", Saint Estephe, Bordeaux, France, 2016

Grapes: A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot & Petit Verdot, gravel/clay soil, 45 year old vines, hand harvested, aged in French oak barrels

The palate is fruity, mineral, juicy, well-balanced and offers an acidulous frame, a fine freshness as well as a very fine tension. On the palate this wine expresses notes of fleshy blackberry, fleshy cassis and more slightly small red berries associated with a hint of cherry as well as fine hints of toasted, chocolate, liquorice as well as a discreet hint of tea.

Critic's Tasting Note:

"Plenty of violets and cassis on the nose, as well as some fresh, leafy aromas that lead to a wealth of dense, dark and juicy fruit, framed in fine, assertive tannins. A good-value 2016. Try from 2022."

93/100 points, James Suckling, January 2019

First made in 1979, "Prieur de Meyney" is the second wine of the cru bourgeois producer, Chateau Meyney, and its vineyards are neighbours to those of classed growth Chateau Montrose. The 2016 vintage was an excellent year for Meyney.

Food Match: Duck breast with ceps and chestnuts, roast lamb with herbs, steak, wild boar stew with a mushroom sauce. Aged Cheddar or Comté, raw cow's milk Saint-Nectaire, or Roquefort blue cheeses.
