Description

Puligny Montrachet, Domaine Berthelemot, Cotes de Beaune, Burgundy, France, 2022

Grape: 100% Chardonnay, 0.4 ha vineyard on clay/limestone soil, organic, sustainable farming, hand picked, matured in French oak casks (20% new wood)

Producer Tasting Note:

White flowers, ripe orchard fruit and gentle lemon citrus on the nose, and a beautifully linear palate with a brilliant mineral tension. The ripe fruit character builds as the wine warms in your mouth, seasoned with a cleverly balanced hint of oak. Seductive and long. A fabulous Puligny-Montrachet from a newly-purchased parcel of vines.

Critic's Tasting Note:

"Subtle oak notes on the nose. Creamy herbal citrus. These Berthelemot wines have a lovely balance between generous, pure fruit and excellent freshness."  Drink 2025-2029

16.5/20 points (= 90/100), Julia Harding MW, JANCISROBINSON.COM, January 2024

The Property: Berthelemot is a young domaine, created as recently as 2006, as a result of the merging of the mature holdings of the Jean Garaudet and Yves Darviot estates. A family business, based in Meursault, and cultivating 15 hectares in the Côte de Beaune area (Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Pommard, Beaune. etc). The wines have been certified "organic" from vintage 2021.

This village Puligny-Montrachet is grown in two plots: Les Rechaux, meaning "warmth" or "a source of heat", and Les Meix, a word formerly used to describe a small plot of land just large enough to feed a family. In Les Rechaux the soil is deep clay and alluvium, and in Les Meix it is clay and limestone. The vineyards were planted in 1961 and 1965 respectively.

Food Match: Serve at 12-14°C with roast cod in a cream and mushroom sauce
