Rioja comes in two main styles: Oaked, or unoaked (Joven). The former are wines offering mature and complex flavours, mostly produced by large houses based in the region, and include bottles labelled as Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva. The latter, unoaked, wines are the sort of young, fruity styles you'll find in tapas bars across Spain. The various oaked wines are probably the most widely consumed in the UK, and this case contains a delicious selection showing how well the ageing in barrel complements the fruit of the vines. Even the white is given the wood treatment with barrel fermentation and lees ageing adding textural complexity. All the reds here are "Reserva" quality using only higher grade grapes, with longer ageing, and a guaranteed great drinking experience.

Muga Reserva, 2021 ~ This is fresh and minerally up front, opening to reveal a fine mesh of chopped cherry and plum skin flavours, with fragrant hints of ground coffee, smoked paprika and dried marjoram. Sculpted tannins define the long, slightly chewy finish

Cerro Anon Reserva, 2019 ~ Dark ruby in the glass, with aromas of Mission fig, cured ham & black olives. Cassis, dark plum, smoke, dried Mediterranean herb & roasted red pepper flavours are set into forceful tannins that slowly peel away to reveal a smoky finish

Gran Dominio Reserva, 2018 ~ The intensely perfumed blend of Tempranillo with a touch of Mazuelo offers us notes of black cherry, leather and smoke on the nose with a powerful, fruit-packed, fleshy palate

Bagordi Reserva Red, 2013 ~  A bright cherry colour, with expressive aromas of balsamic and spices, toasted almonds, while in the background, ripe red fruit. Integrated spicy oak on the palate, with velvety tannins and very agreeable dark chocolate aftertaste

Urbina Reserva Especial, 2006 ~  Mature, tertiary aromas of leather, balsamic, moss, spices and wood. On the palate, it is fluid, with the tannins developed and well integrated. It maintains a thread of acidity having pure Rioja classicism with the characteristic notes of tobacco, cigars and nutmeg
