Trebbiano is a late-ripening white variety found in 85 of Italy's more than 300 D.O.C and in 3 of the D.O.C.G. wines. Tuscany (Trebbiano Toscana) is the most planted region with further plantings in Umbria (Orvieto), Lazio (Frascati) and Emila Romagna. It is known mainly as a workhorse graoe, rather than one of notable quality. The wines made are light, with high acidity and a neutral character.
As Ugni Blanc, it's found in the south west of France, particularly in the Cotes de Gascogne. Rarely seen as a single varietal here, it is often blended with a wide range of other local grapes. Surprisingly, it is the number one variety planted in the country with more than twice the area under vine compared to Chardonnay. It is also used in the production of brandy (Armagnac) in the region and, more famously when used to make Cognac
Internationally, Trebbiano/Ugni Blanc is also grown in Bulgaria, Corsica, Croatia, Greece, Argentina and Uruguay.
