Bonarda

Bonarda is a red grape variety found mostly in Argentina and is second only to Malbec in plantings here. It produces wines with berry flavours (strawberry and blueberry) and often with a note of smoke. Also grown in California, under the name "Charbono", it has no connection with the original Italian grape, Bonarda Piemontese. Food pairings to try include the traditional Argentine beef or sweet corn filled empanadas (pasties), Mexican style chimichurri steak, pasta in tomato based sauce, grilled meats, or mild cheeses.
