Description
Brunello Di Montalcino Campogiovanni, Agricola San Felice, Brunello DOCG, Tuscany, Italy, 2018
Grape: 100% Sangiovese Grosso, 12ha vineyard, silt-sand soil with some clay on sandstone & calcareous marl, 36 months' ageing in large Slavonian oak botti (followed by 12 months in bottle)
Producer Tasting Note:
Expansive aromas of wild berry, plum, blackberry preserves, aromatic cedar, tobacco leaf and leather. A generous, complex palate displaying a rich mouthfeel with meaty, savoury characters and fine-grained tannins, developing into a long, persistent, satisfyingly rich finish marked by fruit liqueur.
The Tenuta Campogiovanni is a sister estate to Agricola San Felice (Chianti Classico), and is located on the southern slope of the Montalcino hill, near San Angelo in Colle.
This 65ha estate comprises 19ha of vineyard across three separate parcels - amongst olive trees, woods and fields. Production here (and 14ha of vineyard) is strongly focused on Brunello, with the remainder largely used for Rosso di Montalcino. Campogiovanni Brunello is amongst the very best in the region.
Critics' Tasting Notes:
"The nose is metallic and stony, with a puff of petrol, like a road trip in winter, but also brighter notes of bergamot, black currant and black cherry. The palate embraces the bitter fruitiness of bergamot before savory notes return for a bitter finish. A balanced, polished and integrated wine."

"From the folks at San Felice in Chianti Classico, the Campogiovanni 2018 Brunello di Montalcino definitely shows a lot of richness and concentration that translates to more fruit weight and texture. The effect is a little heavy and overdone in my opinion, and this vintage prioritizes brawn over nuanced detail. There's a lot coming at you at once, with ripe plum, blackberry and spice. These qualities set up the wine for an immediate pairing with a hearty meat dish. Production is generous with 93,000 bottles made." Drink 2024-2038
93/100 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, March 2023
"Very Sangiovese, this red combines both fruit and savory elements -- cherry, strawberry, hibiscus, wet hay, iron and tobacco -- with a firm structure. Expressive, balanced, vibrant and long, with stiff tannins on the finish. Best from 2025 through 2042."
95/100 points, Wine Spectator, June 2023
Food Match: Pairs well with rich meats such as game, grilled steak (Bistecca alla Fiorentina), wild boar ragu, roasted lamb, or mature Pecorino cheese
