Description

Domain Mega Spileo Assyrtiko, Cavino S.A., Achaia PGI, Peloponnese, Greece, 2024

Grape: 100% Assyrtiko, practising organic, 28ha estate, vineyards at 780-880 m.a.s.l., sand/clay/gravel soils, lees aged in steel tanks for 3 months, 1/3 of the wine receives oak barrel maturation for a further 3 months

Producer Tasting Note:

Located within a UNESCO national park area in the northern Peloponnese, inland from the Gulf of Corinth, grapes for this wine are sourced from Cavino's Mega Spileo Estate's spectacular mountain vineyards in Aigialeia and Kalavryta. The wine has a straw yellow colour, intense aromas of stone fruits, grapefruit, dried herbs, and mineral notes. Dense and full-bodied in the mouth, rich in fruit, balanced by the characteristic Assyrtiko saline acidity. A long aftertaste.

Estate: Cavino was founded in 1958 in Aigio by Konstantinos Anastasiou and Ioannis Duskas. It was originally a winery, but it very soon became a distillery too. Aigio, the city where the vision of creating a modern winery/distillery was conceived, is located in a unique landscape of vineyards. The slopes of Aigialia combine with the mountains and the sea in a unique way to form a special microclimate. Cavino primarily uses indigenous grape varieties such as Assyrtiko, Roditis, Lagorthi, Sideritis, Agiorgitiko, Mvro Kalavrytino and of course, the famous Mavrodaphne. However, it also successfully grows international varieties such as Sauvignon blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Food Match: Fish, seafood, white meats with white sauces
