Description

Château Mouton Rothschild, First Growth Pauillac, Bordeaux, France, 2003

Grapes: A flagship first growth from an 84ha estate planted on deep gravel soils, the 2003 vintage is a traditional Bordeaux blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot

The wine was hand-harvested from vines averaging 44 years old, at a yield of 28 hl/ha, and matured for 18 months in new French oak. The resulting colour is an intense garnet with a highly refined Cabernet-driven nose.

Producer Tasting Note:

Aromatic blackcurrant and cedarwood sit alongside richer tones of caramel, stewed fruit and prune-like concentration. The palate is lush and powerful, with stylish, well-rounded tannins; flavours of spice, Havana cigar and eucalyptus weave through a long, harmonious and silky finish.

Producer comment: Hervé Berland describes the 2003 as an exceptional Mouton, comparing it to the 1982 for its richness and concentration, married with exotic spiciness — brooding and powerful with a long finish.

Critics' Tasting Notes:

Robert M. Parker Jr. (Wine Advocate) called it a "true giant from Pauillac," rating it 95–96/100 and advising that patience will be a virtue, with anticipated maturity 2015–2050.

Jeff Leve (The Wine Cellar Insider) awarded 96/100, noting aromas of cigar box, jammy black raspberry, mint, ash and tobacco and describing the palate as rich, sensuous and flamboyant.

This is a wine for serious collectors and special-occasion drinking. For immediate enjoyment, decant for at least an hour; for long-term cellaring it will develop further complexity over decades.

Serving Suggestion: serve slightly below ambient room temperature after decanting, paired with roast rib of beef with a rich red wine jus, herb‑crusted rack of lamb or mature hard cheeses. These dishes complement the wine's concentrated fruit, tobacco and spice notes.
