Chateau Palmer 2004

Chateau Palmer 3eme Cru Classé, Margaux, Bordeaux, France, 2004 

Grapes: A blend of 47% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Petit Verdot, drawn from Palmer’s 55 ha vineyard on gravel soils and matured in French oak barrels. Palmer’s signature flesh and texture are heightened here by an unusually high proportion of old vine Merlot, many plants dating from the 30s.

Producer Tasting Note: the château describes the 2004s as “very classic compared to those of 2003, but magnificently combine the breed and finesse of our terroir with the flesh and power of a very great year,” a wine that reflects the generosity of the Palmer vineyard.

The 2004 vintage is a classic expression from the Palmer vineyard, offered from a private collection and described by the château and critics as a wine combining both finesse and power.

Critics’ Tasting Notes:

Robert M. Parker Jr. (Wine Advocate, June 2007) awarded 94/100 and called it “one of the vintage’s great successes,” praising its “power and elegance” and noting flavours of blackberries, truffles, flowers, incense and camphor. Parker indicates a drinking window of 2011–2025+.

Jeff Leve (The Wine Cellar Insider, September 2021) scored the wine 95/100, highlighting its “rich, concentrated, silky, fresh, and fragrant” character with strong notes of flowers, red pit fruits, black currants, earth, cedar and tobacco and an elegant, refined expression with notable length and purity.
