Description
Fantini "Edizione 24" Cinque Autoctoni, Vino Rosso, Italy, 2022
Grapes: A blend of approximately 1/3 each of Montepulciano, Primitivo and Sangiovese, plus small amounts of Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera, destemmed bunches, fermented in new oak barriques, unfiltered, aged 13 months in oak (60% American & 40% French), 12g//L residual sugar (off dry style)
Producer Tasting Note:
This wine is deep ruby red in colour. The nose is complex with intense and persistent aromas of cherry and blackcurrant, alongside notes of dried herbs, cinnamon, cloves, cocoa and liquorice. The palate reveals a balanced structure with a lifted, elegant freshness. Soft, supple tannins lead to a long finish.
The Montepulciano and Sangiovese grapes hail from the hills of Abruzzo from vineyards situated at 300 metres above sea level. The remaining varieties were grown in Southern Puglia. Winemakers Filippo Baccalaro and Dennis Verdecchia oversee production.
Critics' Tasting Notes:
"A red blend of Montepulciano, Primitivo, Sangiovese, Negroamaro, and Malvasia Nera, aged for 13 months in oak barrels. It is a wine that balances opulence with charm, representing a blend of grapes from both Puglia and Abruzzo. Primitivo shines through with exuberant ripe fruit notes, Negroamaro refines the powerful tannins, and Malvasia ties the blend together harmoniously. Beyond ripe plum and herbal nuances, chocolate is a defining characteristic of this wine. This profile carries through to the palate, where creamy chocolate notes, fruit with honey-like undertones, and an earthy touch create a warm, opulent experience—evoking images of beef stew on a cold night or aged cheese enjoyed whenever this bottle and a corkscrew are close at hand. Alcohol: 14.5%."
93/100 points, Revista Adega (Brazil),
"A savory nose of exotic spices, cocoa, cedar, ripe plums and mulberries. Full and structured, with lightly chewy tannins and a core of ripe dark fruit layered with oak spices and earthy nuances. Drink or hold." James suckling, 2025
Also awarded GOLD at both Berlin Wine Trophy and Lyon International Wine Competition in 2024
Food Match: Best served at 16–18°C alongside heavy, savoury dishes such as baked lamb, Florentine ribeye steak, wild boar ragout, cold cuts & sausages, seasoned cheeses
