One of Italy's most widely planted varieties, Garganega is grown mainly in Veneto, north east Italy, to produce Soave. In the Classico zone of Soave the grape can produce a delicate wine with aromas of peach blossom, almond, apricot and baked apple. Good Soave, with lower yields (the grape is known for its high yield production), can have flavours of lemon, tangerine, toasted almonds and spice. A limited number of wines in the region are made in a sweet style (Recioto di Soave), but usually the wines made from Garganega are dry. In recent years, it has been proven that Garganega is the same grape variety as the Grecanico of Sicily. Recommended food matches include seafood, roasted vegetables, and dishes using citrus dressings or aromatic green herbs.
