Description

Moss Wood Wilyabrup Chardonnay, Margaret River, Western Australia, 2024

Grape: 100% Chardonnay, hand picked and whole bunch pressed with 18 months in French oak (55% new). Full malolactic fermentation.

Producer Tasting Note:

The Moss Wood style is to produce a complex wine, rich, with veils of fruit flavours. Chardonnay with a superb ageing capacity. Fastidious viticulture, fermentation & lees ageing in French barriques.

Colour: Medium straw hue with a touch of green at the rim; bright and clear.

Nose: Classic Moss Wood Chardonnay aromatics - rich and lifted with yellow peach, marmalade and ripe nectarine. Layers of citrus zest, particularly preserved lemon and lime, are complemented by florals of honeysuckle and jasmine. Subtle oak-derived notes of roasted cashew, shortbread, caramel and malt weave seamlessly into the background.

Palate: The palate is full-bodied and powerful yet finely structured, with generous stone fruit flavours of peach and apricot complemented by grapefruit, lime and subtle spice. A taut, fresh acid line provides the backbone, ensuring the wine remains lifted and precise while balancing the richness of the fruit. Creamy texture from malolactic fermentation is supported by vibrant acidity and fine, toasty oak. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering notes of nougat, roasted nuts and a gentle touch of caramel.

Cellaring: The Moss Wood 2024 Chardonnay is immediately appealing for its fruit generosity and balance, making it a pleasure to drink young. However, it has the structure and concentration to reward patience. We recommend cellaring for at least 10 years to allow the development of complex bottle bouquet, with full maturity expected at 20 years of age.

Critics' Tasting Notes:

"The 2024 Chardonnay is so rich and opulent on the nose; it leads with toasty oak and exotic fruit, pineapple and peach, custard and vanilla. In the mouth, the wine is oak-dominated and ultra-rich in fruit character, although the alcohol does not indicate that this is derived from late picking, as it hovers at a modest 13.5% alcohol. The 2024 season was the hottest and driest on record, and while this was almost horrifying to watch from afar, it came as no surprise to vignerons, who recorded rainfall cessation in September 2023 and some challenging spring conditions as well. Those who were surprised were not paying attention. This wine feels a product of collision between the season and the house style, both of which tended toward warm, rich and ripe, although the heat of the season likely necessitated a slightly earlier pick. Sealed under screw cap."  Drink 2025-2030

89/100 points, Erin Larkin, WINE ADVOCATE, October 2025

"Generous, rounded aromas of lemon confit, honeysuckle, beeswax, lanolin, pastry, grapefruit and salted nuts. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, but don’t be turned off by the ripeness. There’s great tension and purity with a mineral drive underneath the textural, creamy and very giving finish. Typical of the vintage, balancing freshness and power, but in an old-school style. Drink or hold. Screw cap."

95/100 points, James Suckling, July 2025

"One of Margaret River’s benchmark chardonnays, and this release from a warm vintage is exceptional. It’s fine and delicately poised, yet with regional DNA driving it through to a powerful, sustained finish. Aromas of lemon meringue, brioche and light florals lead into a palate of chalky, savoury elements alongside vanillin and lemony notes. Fine, precise acidity lifts the flavours through to the long finish. An outstanding wine.”

97/100 points, Ray Jordan

"Well butter me both sides! I reckon this is a better wine than the 2023. Peach, mint slice, lime, lightly toasty cedar oak, cashew and a little spice. It’s bright and juicy, grilled lime and peach, pastry dough, a lively but settled tang to acidity, mint nougat and floral mouth-perfume, some flinty elements here too, lime and a drizzle of honey on a finish of excellent length. Yum."

95/100 points, Gary Walsh, THE WINE FRONT, December 2025

Food Match: Drink with creamy mushroom and roasted vegetable dishes such as pizza, ravioli and quiche
