Description

Marrugat Gran Reserva Cava Brut Nature Millesime, Bodegas Pinord, Penedes, Spain, 2019

Grapes: A blend of 70% Xarel·lo, 25% Macabeo and 5% Parellada, calcareous & clay soils, high-altitude vineyards in the Alt Penedes, biodynamic farming, manual harvest, traditional bottle fermentation, 60 months' maturation on lees before disgorgement and bottling

Producer Tasting Note:

Bright straw yellow colour with fine bubbles. It offers complex aromas of fruits such as apple, pear and citrus, combined with floral and mineral notes typical of the calcareous soil. As it evolves, subtle touches of almonds, nuts and brioche appear, the result of long ageing. It is velvety and well-balanced, with a fresh acidity that brings out the notes of apple and pear. The fine bubbles and subtle aromas of dried fruits and almonds provide an elegant texture, while the persistent and slightly mineral finish reflects its aged character.

Critical Acclaim:

Awarded 89/100 points, GUIA PENIN (Spain), January 2025

The family wine business was founded 150 years ago by Miquel Tetes Valldosera. Since then, generation after generation, the wines produced have been growing in prestige, the indigenous varieties have improved markedly, and the family name has become inseparably linked to the Penedés area where they are based. The district is situated between Barcelona and Tarragona, with the mountains of Montserrat marking the border in the north and the Mediterranean in the South. The soil is varied, contrasting from chalky clay to sandstone with distinct differences in depth. The mild Mediterranean climate is ideal for growing vines, indeed there is evidence that the Romans planted vineyards here. The slightly wetter weather in the valleys means that there is no need for irrigation.

Food Match: Its acidity makes it the perfect accompaniment to Iberian ham, fish zarzuela (Catalan seafood stew) or stewed meats. The minerality of Xarel·lo makes it perfect to accompany all kinds of seafood, especially oysters
