1963 is considered by many wine critics to be a legendary vintage in the Douro.

Generally, Royal Oporto's wines are lighter and less complex than, for example, a Taylor's or Graham's from the same year.

Estate: Real Companhia Velha is the oldest wine company in Portugal, founded by royal charter in 1756. The company currently owns 5 farms in the Alto Douro Wine Region – Quinta das Carvalhas, Quinta de Cidrô, Quinta dos Aciprestes, Quinta do Casal da Granja and Quinta do Síbio – totaling 557 ha of its own vineyarsd. The Vintage Port is traditionally produced from the company's 3 x "A" rated estates: Carvalhas, Aciprestes and Síbio. The excellent 1963 vintage was produced when the company was state owned by the Portuguese government. As a brand, Royal Oporto came back into private ownership in 1978, with title reverting to Manuel da Silva Reis. In 2002, his son, Pedro Silva Reis, became the twenty-seventh President of Real Companhia Velha. In more recent years, the company has become better known for its production of aged Tawny styles.
