Santenay 1er Cru Clos Rousseau Vieilles Vignes, Domaine Bachey Legros, Côte de Beaune, Burgundy, France, 2022  

Grape: 100% Pinot Noir, old vines ("Grand Clos Rousseau" [planted 1980] and "Petit Clos Rousseau" [planted 1955]), aged in oak barrels (30% new) for 12 to 15 months 

Producer Tasting Note:

This is another great wine from the Bachey-Legros. The nose is enticing, cherry-infused, with pure and fresh red berries. These flavours are also found on the palate where hints of juicy, ripe plum join the happy mix. Quite intense and firm on the finish. 

The Petit Clos and the Grand Clos are very complementary. Petit Clos, with vines growing on a limestone bedrock, lends the wine its mineral structure and a very fine and elegant red fruit character. Grand Clos, situated on clay-marl soil, adds richness and power along with aromas of lovely ripe black fruit.

The cuvées are vinified separately. Bachey-Legros seek to achieve the perfect balance between structure, elegance and aromatic complexity. This is a fruity, concentrated and ethereal wine.

The Estate: 19 hectares of prime vineyards, which have expanded with each subsequent generation, are planted on the best sites in Santenay, Chassagne-Montrachet, and Les Maranges, where the finest qualities of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are expressed. This is particularly true of those vines planted between 1935 and 1955, which have been lovingly tended, decade after decade. Established in the 19th century, the current (6th) generation of the family to handle the running of the domaine are Samuel and Lénaïc.

Food Match: Great as an aperitif also with red and white meats, all kinds of cheese and chocolate desserts.
