Description
Tignanello, Marchesi Antinori, Toscano IGT, Tuscany, Italy, 2022
Grape: A blend of 78% Sangiovese, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc, single 57ha parcel of limestone-rich soil, aged 13 months in French and Hungarian oak barrels (new and second-fill)
Producer Tasting Note:
Deep ruby red in colour with purple highlights, Tignanello 2022 strikes the nose with notes of cherry, ripe black cherry, and pomegranate seeds, which, combined with delicate hints of violet, lead to fresh balsamic sensations. Elegant hints of vanilla and cotton candy complete the bouquet. On the palate, sweet and savoury tannins lend dynamism to the drink, alternating between density and freshness that culminates in a long finish, recalling the notes perceived on the nose.
Critics' Tasting Notes:
"Tasting the 2022 vintage of Tignanello was a powerful reminder of why this wine remains the undisputed benchmark for the Super Tuscan category. If the 2021 was a celebration of balance, the 2022 is a triumph of terroir over the elements. In a vintage characterized by intense heat, Tignanello didn’t just survive; it thrived, proving once again that Marchesi Antinori understands this hillside better than anyone else. From the moment it hit the glass, the wine displayed a darker, more brooding personality than its predecessor. The color is an intense ruby, almost purple at the rim. The nose is incredibly expressive and surprisingly fresh given the warm year—bursting with ripe black cherries, bramble fruit, and blood orange, layered with complex notes of violet and a distinct graphite minerality that speaks to the limestone soils of the Tignanello vineyard. The tannins are velvety and satiny, wrapping around a core of savory fruit and sweet spice. The finish is exceptionally long, polished, and precise."

"It exudes a charismatic aroma of black cherries, berries, licorice and rose petals;smooth on the palate, the tannins are precisely placed and well integrated, the acidity provides a perfect foundation, possessing character and finesse right through to the long finish with notes of cassis and cherries" Drink 2027-2034
97/100 points, Vinum Wine Magazine, November 2025
"A slightly different breed than the ’21, the 2022 Antinori ‘Tignanello’ Red Wine really needs about an hour in the decanter to get going. I enjoyed this wine on five occasions while staying in Firenze and each time I noticed how the wine began to slowly evolve after an hour. It is even more heady and intense than the ’21, with a seamless texture and polished tannins that frame a gorgeous core of creme de violette, cassis, loamy soils and suggestions of sweet pipe tobacco on the palate. A total headturning bottling, make sure to give this a lot of air if enjoying in its heady youth." Drink 2026-2046

Winemaking:
The climatic conditions of the harvest required, as usual, great attention both in the vineyard during harvesting operations and in the cellar upon arrival of the grapes, where sorting and initial processing were fundamental to achieving an optimal final result. During the fermentation process in truncated conical tanks, the musts were macerated with great attention to preserving the aromas, extracting the colour, and managing the sweetness and elegance of the tannins. Racking took place only after careful daily tastings. Once the skins were separated from the wine, malolactic fermentation began in barriques to enhance the finesse and complexity of the aromas. The ageing process took place in French oak barrels and, to a very small extent, Hungarian oak, mostly new, for a total period of just over 13 months. After an initial ageing in separate lots, these were blended to complete the evolution in wood. The wine, produced primarily with Sangiovese grapes and a small portion of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, aged for a further 12 months in bottle before being released to the market.
Food Matching: Rich, meaty dishes including Wild Boar Stew, Venison, Steak, Pasta with Meat Sauce and Truffles, Roast Lamb and Roast Beef
Another superb vintage. An incredibly elegant Tuscan wine with the potential to age and savour for decades!
