Description

Vina Dagaz Granito Estate Carmenere, Valle de Colchagua, Chile, 2021

Grape: 100% Carmenere, 28ha estate, granite soil, aged 14 months in French oak barrels

Producer Tasting Note:

Elegant nose, with blackberry, black & red pepper, cinnamon, tobacco, and spices. In the mouth it has a good structure, a pleasant acidity, great persistence, and a long finish.

Critics' Tasting Notes:

"Located about 35 kilometers from the sea, in the coastal zone of the Colchagua Valley, this carmenere comes from a selection of three parcels on the Dagaz property in Pumanque. After 14 months in barrels (all used oak), this red wine has a delicious perfume full of fruits and a background of herbal tones, very typical of the variety. The palate has fine, sharp acidity, the tannins are sharp, and, surrounding all of this, the fruity sensation that ends up dominating."

94/100 points, Patricio Tapia - Descorchados, January 2024

"Chewy and inviting nose of spiced dark fruit with a touch of black pepper and kirsch. The palate is layered and long with a density and purple fruits that shine through the palate. Blue and spiced with firm tannins - long and rich. Dense and powerful finish. Rich, blue, and structured."

93/100 points, Alistair Cooper MW by Catad'Or Wine Guide, April 2024

Also awarded 93/100 points, Tim Atkin MW, December 2023

The Estate:

Viña Dagaz (Dagaz is a Celtic rune that means ‘the beginning of a new path’) was founded in 2015 by renowned winemaker Marco Puyo (ex winemaker at Chateau Lafite's Chilean operation, Los Vascos) and Patricio Gomez-Barris. After many years exploring the different areas of Colchagua whilst working on behalf of other wineries Marco felt that the temperate Mediterranean climate and granitic soils of Pumanque offered a unique opportunity to create something more personal. Drawing inspiration from the granitic soils of Côtes du Rhône, Galicia and Rioja, he wanted to create something that authentically represented the terroir. The first vintage in 2016 produced Tierras de Pumanque (a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Carménère and Syrah). Today Dagaz continue to produce high quality wines showing elegant mineral characteristics and good acidity with great structure.
