Carignan

Carignan is believed to have originated in Spain in the Aragon region. It's known under various names in Spain including Cariñena, Samso and Mazuelo, and was historically a component of neighbouring Rioja's red wine blend. The wines are generally high in tannin and acidity, though modern wines from the Languedoc-Roussillon, south of France, are sometimes treated to Carbonic Maceration which softens the tannins enabling them to be drunk young. Flavours are associated with black fruit, pepper and liquorice spices. The variety is also found in Italy/Sardinia (known here as Carignano) where it can be blended with Cannonau (Garnacha/Grenache). In South America, old vine vineyards of Carignan are also found in Chile's Maule valley.
