Formerly part of Yugoslavia, Croatia reflects the country’s diverse landscapes, from the sunny Adriatic coast to the continental interior. Its main wine regions include Istria and Kvarner (in the west), Dalmatia (& islands), Croatian Uplands (central Croatia), and Slavonia and the Danube (in the east). Indigenous varieties are central to Croatia’s identity, including whites from Malvazija Istarska, Pošip, Grk, and Graševina (Welschriesling),, plus reds from Terlan, Plavac Mali, and Crljenak Kastelanski (Zinfandel), alongside international grapes such as Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. White wines make up the majority of production in Croatia with only around a third being from red varieties. Wine styles range from fresh, aromatic whites and elegant sparkling wines to full-bodied reds, particularly those made from Plavac Mali. Coastal vineyards often produce mineral, Mediterranean-influenced wines, while continental regions are known for crisp, aromatic whites, making Croatia an increasingly distinctive European wine destination. Many producers are small, often making artisinal "natural" wines (including orange), or those using organic and biodynamic practices. These wines offer real character and the quality can be outstanding from the best growers.
