Godello is a white wine grape grown in north-western Spain, particularly Galicia (Valdeorras), and in Bierzo in the neighbouring Castilla y Leon region. Ancient, 100 year old Godello vines can be found on steep, slate slopes in Valdeorras, lending credence to these wines having a certain similarity to Riesling. The Gouveio found in northern Portugal (Douro & Dao) is thought to be the same grape. Good examples from both countries have a tangy grapefruit and saline character, often with a smoky mineral note. Think of the wines as being similar to an elegant, Burgundian style Chardonnay. Godello pairs well with light meats and poultry (try lemon chicken), grilled shrimps in a citrus & herb marinade, or vegetarian dishes including courgette risotto. Oaked versions work with grilled lobster or langoustines, pork tenderloin, creamy Spanish croquetas or a classic Tortilla Española.
“In any case, Godello remains one of the highest quality white grapes in the country. It makes one of the best whites that can last up to a decade, maybe a little longer. The wines gain in complexity and depth with time in bottle, as Riesling does, the Godello fruit flavour turning from apple to quince, with something reminiscent of a Chenin Blanc from the Loire.” Luis Gutiérrez, www.jancisrobinson.com
